Eligibility Criteria: Disabled, Elderly and/or Medically Fragile

Provides free, comprehensive dental treatment to vulnerable people with disabilities or who are elderly or medically fragile. The program operates through a volunteer network of more than 15,000 dentists and 3,600 dental labs across the United States. Applicants must lack adequate income to pay for dental care and have a permanent disability, are age 65 or older and/or qualify as medical-fragile. The program will evaluate the individual’s application for eligibility and need and provide referral to an appropriate provider. (There may be long wait times for an available provider.)

WAGES is a non-profit Community Action Agency which plans, develops, and administers human service programs designed to meet the needs of the community. Services for older adults in Lenoir County include weatherization (to help people reduce home energy loss and lower heating/cooling costs) and HARRP (assists people in repairing or replacing broken heating/cooling systems).

U.S.D.A. Rural Repair and Rehabilitation  -  (252) 526-9799 ext. 4

Program provides loans and grants to very low-income homeowners to repair, improve, or modernize their dwellings or to remove health and safety hazards. Homeowner-occupants must be unable to obtain affordable credit elsewhere and must have very low incomes, defined as below 50 percent of the area median income. They must need to make repairs and improvements to make the dwelling more safe and sanitary or to remove health and safety hazards. Grants are only available to homeowners who are 62 years old or older and cannot repay a Section 504 loan. Loans of up to $20,000 and grants of up to $7,500 are available. Loans are for up to 20 years at 1 percent interest. A real estate mortgage and full title services are required for loans of $7,500 or more. Grants may be recaptured if the property is sold in less than 3 years. Grant funds may be used only to pay for repairs and improvements resulting in the removal of health and safety hazards. A grant/loan combination is made if the applicant can repay part of the cost. Loans and grants can be combined for up to $27,500 in assistance.

Public transportation provided to all individuals in the county. Must call at least 24 hours in advance to reserve a ride. Assistance to older adults 60+ may be available through the Lenoir County Council on Aging. Wait lists may exist.

Eligibility Criteria: age 60+ or disabled, receiving any DAAS service

Provides a one-time vendor payment to help eligible households pay their heating bills.  Only households containing an elderly person age 60 and above or a disabled persons receiving services through the Division of Aging and Adult Services (DAAS) are eligible to potentially receive until funds are exhausted. Any household can potentially receive benefits from January 1st through March 31stor until funds are exhausted. Open to age 60+ or disabled or receiving any DAAS service.

Assists people who find themselves in an emergency or crisis situation and do not qualify for public assistance. Helps with rent, utility bills (electricity, water and natural gas), prescriptions (intended for one-time prescriptions need), limited transportation and also provides food from pantry. Financial assistance limited to $100 per 12 month period. Provides Christian counseling and referrals to other resources to solve the crisis. Applicants must bring: Valid NC picture ID, with Lenoir County address matching the bill's address, and the current bill for which applicant is seeking assistance. Usually, assistance is given until the 10th of the month on late bills. Office open 1-3 pm, M-Th.

Offers rent/utility assistance (please call for specific eligibility requirements), a food pantry, a clothing closet, and spiritual counseling. Assistance is also offered to home burnout victims (must have a referral from the Red Cross).

Provides referrals to caregivers of veterans. The National Caregiver Support Line hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Saturday 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time). Licensed VA social workers and health technicians staff the support line.

Provides reimbursement for citizens who suffer medical expenses and lost wages as a result of being an innocent victim of a crime committed in North Carolina. Victims of rape, assault, child abuse, sexual abuse, domestic violence and drunk driving. In addition, families of homicide victims are eligible to apply for financial assistance. Crime must be reported to authorities within 72 hours. Compensation for damaged or stolen property or pain/suffering is not provided. A maximum of $30,000 may be paid for medical expenses related to treatment of injuries related to crimes. A maximum of $5,000 may be paid for funeral expenses when the victim dies as a result of the crime. Approved claims are paid directly to service provider. Victims have up to 2 years to file claim.
